Thurs.: high 91, low 69, rain .35 A severe thunderstorm with high winds lashed through this area Thursday afternoon. A number of large trees went over power and telephone lines, causing power outages in many areas. The Duke Power and Telephone crews were out during the night making repairs. Jerry Covil of Mid-Continent Telephone Co. stated that there were a number of isolated lines down, but the only major damage was done between McFarland Funer al Chapel and Harmon Field Road where a tree fell across a major cable. A big tree went down at the Lanier Library and it fell across the power line. This outage, kept people in that area and the Gillette Woods area without power until about 2 a.m. Friday. We forgot how dependent we are on electricity until we are without it. One of the American hostages, Richard Queen, 28, was released by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini Thursday because of illness. Hit by staggering loses in its North American auto and truck operations. Ford Motor Co. AARP Meeting The monthly meeting of NRTA- AARP will beheld Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Meeting Place. Dr. Darryl E. Maxwell, pastor of Tryon First Baptist Church will talk on "The Value of a Smile." Visitors are welcome. Refresh ments will be served. A New Arrival Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Turner of Green Creek are parents of a daughter, Hayley Nicole, born July 10th in Spartanburg General Hospital. She has a sister, Candice, age three. The grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Covil and Mrs. Mary Turner Greene. Home Destroyed By Fire Thurs. The home of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Thompson of Thermal View Drive, Lynn was destroyed by fire Thursday night. The Tryon iiremcn received the call about 11:37 p.m. The family was asleep at the time and managed to just get out of the house in time. Nothing was saved. Mobile Home Burned Thursday The Mobile home of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Edwards was destroyed by fire Thursday afternoon about 4:30. The Mill Spring Fire Department sent two trucks to the mobile home which was located on the new U. S. 74 off White Oak Creek. The mobile home was believed to have been hit by lightning. Mrs. Edwards reportedly had gone to Harmon Field to take a son to Little League practice and had her younger children with her When she returned, smoke was coming from the home and when she opened the door, flames shot out. She couldn't get inside to use her phone and sent a child to a neighbor’s house to call. Nothing was saved. William Cole, formerly of Wakefield, Mass, have moved into their new home on Butter Street recently purchased from John J. Hedges. John Knoblock was the broker. Mr. Cole is the brother-in-law of Mrs. Edna Cole of Tryon. Mr. Cole, a native of Long Island is a graduate of Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. He was claims manager in the Natick office of Liberty Mutual Insurance. He enjoys photog raphy. He is a retired Lt. Commander in the U. S. Navy Reserves. Mrs. Cole is the former Geraldine Vining and is a native of Mass. She is a graduate of Goddard Hospital in nursing and retired as a school nurse. Mr. and Mrs. Cole have three children and 4 grandchildren. They are Episcopalians.
